Jury Candelario is a community-driven behavioral health researcher and licensed clinical social worker in California. He serves as Director of the health and human services agency called Access to Prevention Advocacy Intervention and Treatment (APAIT), a division of Special Service for Groups (SSG), headquartered in Los Angeles. APAIT/SSG’s core program pillars are behavioral health, forensic treatment, housing, human trafficking, and sexual health focused on HIV/STIs. Jury’s research has focused largely on the intersection of homelessness, mental health, HIV/AIDS, and its impact on key target groups including the transgender gender-diverse (TGD) and people living with HIV/AIDS (PWA)s communities. Meanwhile, his clinical training centered on the incarcerated population. He is the recipient of the Spirit of Accomplice (2024) and Spirit of Allyship (2016) awards from the national transgender advocacy group called the Trans Latina Coalition; the Innovation Award (2021) from the national Corporation on Supportive Housing (CSH); the White House Office Public Engagement’s Champion of Change Award for his HIV/AIDS activism (2011); the Local Heroes award from the Public Broadcasting System (2008) for his work in the Asian Pacific Islander community; and the Southern California Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (2003). He received his Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Southern California and is currently a Doctoral of Public Health (DrPH) student at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
